London Charles Knight 1833 No ISBN First Edition Very Good Condition No Dust Jacket 
All volumes are bound in green texture-patterned cloth with black spine-labels with gilt lettering (probably publisher's binding). Text is in two parallel columns to each page, illustrations are either contained within a column or sometimes extend across the page. At the time of publishing it could be purchased either in weekly/monthy installments, bound as single volumes as the parts to each volume were completed. Generally binding is sound and there is light wear to corners and spine-ends, in some volumes pages are uncut (untrimmed) and some pages are unopened. End-papers have light foxing, pages are clean with occasional light foxing. Additional flaws are: Vol. I - Split in cloth on rear joint; Vol. II - Split in cloth over both joints, front cover is only partially attached; Vol. V - Short split in cloth on front joint at head of spine; Vol. VIII - Light wear at head of spine; Vol. X - Cloth split over both joints, spine strip has probably been re-glued, brown mark on front end-paper; Vol. X - Partial split in cloth over front joint; Vol. XII - Short splits in joints at spine-ends; Vol. XIII - Cloth split over front joint, covers are firmly attached; Vol. XIV - Cloth split over both joints, covers are firmly attached, light wear at head of spine; Vol. XV - Small area of damage to cloth in centre of rear cover, short splits in cloth over front joint; Vol. XVI - Light wear at head of spine, light wear to cloth over cords at front joint; Vol. XVIII - Light wear at head of spine; Vol. XIX - Light wear at head of spine; Vol. XXIII - Light wear to cloth over cords at front joint; Vol. XXV - Light wear at head of spine, light wear to cloth over cords at front joint; Vol. XXVI - Light wear at head of spine, light wear to cloth over cords at front joint; Vol XXVII - Light wear at head of spine, page vii (last page showing contributors) is detached. This is Volume II only. Contemporary full leather binding with banded spine. Leather is well rubbed, corners are significantly scuffed, wear at spine ends, front cover is detached, rear cover is partially detached and has some loss of leather. Front end-paper is detached, and rear end-paper is almost detached, other wise internal binding is sound. End-papers have areas of darkening, other pages are clean except for occasional light smudges on leading edges, plates are crisp and bright. Early pages have vertical crease. The volume contains 54 plates and there is evidence that two additional plates have been removed. Pages of this volume are 655-1254. Significant content and plates include Fencing, Heraldry, Electricity, Fortification, Gunnery, Hydraulics including diving bell and other early equipment, Natural History. Volume I (first part of Tome I) has half-title, frontis, title in black and red, dedication to the King, elaborate header and capital. Each new letter has a simple decorated header and a decorated capital. Volume III (first part of Tome 2) has red and black title-page. Leather is well rubbed with some wear at spine-ends, leather over joints has split at the ends, binding is sound. All four volumes have a bookplate for "Ampleforth Abbey" on inside of front cover together with a small library label at the lower edge, small plain glued labels fixed to upper edge of rear end-papers.
