2 matching volumes in dark blue with ornate gilt decoration, lightly rubbed at edges,bumped and lightly scuffed corners, sound binding but paper split over front internal hinge in both volumes. Same previous owner's name at front of both volumes. Small bookseller's label at lower edge of inside rear cover (Leighton Son & Hodge, Shoe Lane, London) Both volumes have foxing to plain title-page and to vignette title, pages are otherwise clean occasional light foxing in margins of chromolithographic plates. Bright gilt block edges. Both volumes state Illustrated by forty plates from drawings taken on the spot by William Simpson and both have all the required plates. Volume I has 39 unnumbered full plates plus the vignette plate. Volume II has 40 full plates(numbered) plus the vignette plate, plates 2 and 3 are in reverse order, plate 37 does not exist but plate 41 is the last plate. 2-volume set (complete).
